Heard this on the radio this morning:
Â
PETA thinks they can boost morale of the troops stationed in Afghanistan by sending them vegan chocolate. They heard the troops were craving chocolate, which is hard to come by and PETA decided to do something about it. They are making vegan chocolates that have the image of Osama Bin Laden with the words "Bin Laden Bites" underneath. Biting off Bin Laden's head is an added bonus of the chocolates. The PETA website says it's a delicious and biting oxymoron - cruelty-free beheadings.
Â
PETA says they’re using the chocolates as a way of protesting bin Laden’s “torture and killing” of animals in the days following the attacks on the U.S. in 2001 when the “guardians” of said animals were killed, leaving the animals to die of starvation, toxic fumes and dehydration. Oh yeah, they oppose the attacks too.
Â
The chocolates are selling on the PETA website for $15 and will ship in January. Proceeds from the sales are to benefit PETA programs.
Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti
A lot of what PETA does is too extreme for me, but I think this is a good idea that helps the troops and gets their point across.
1I can't seem to make up my mind on this.
I think it's a nice gesture to send them chocolate since they heard about the troops craving it so much. And it is humorous to say the least.
But their message about it being a way to protest the plight of the animals being affected by 9/11 seems a bit much to me although I wouldn't expect PETA to do this without adding some type of message. I'm not denying that there were animals harmed or that suffered because their owners did not return. But that is minor in comparison to the actual events of 9/11.
2I understand what you're saying. Obviously what happened to the animals pales in comparison to what happened to their owners. But, PETA is an organization concerned with animals. I mean, horrible things happen to humans every single day, should animal rescue organizations not exist until all humans are rescued? (I know that's not a completely accurate comparison, but I think it gets my point across.)
3I totally see your point. I'm huge advocat for animals (I like them more than most people). And I can see how PETA would be concerned about the animals in 9/11.
4Osama Bin Laden on chocolate...Mm, no.
5i'd eat it! i think it's kind of funny, but i have a more twisted sense of humor than some other people. the part about the animals and 9/11 is kind of odd, but i get it.
plus, this is probably the most sane thing peta's done in a while!
6is vegan chocolate any good??
is this more of a punishment than a gift?
7After not having any chocolate in so long, isn't any chocolate going to taste good at this point?
8well, there is chocolate in some MREs and their spouses/family members probably send it too... more often to Afghan than Iraq because of the weather i would think.
9I would imagine it tasts like bakers chocolate, nasty. But they probably just substitute cows milk for soy milk which is pretty sweet. So even though my imagination runs to think it tastes like craps, it's probably fine.
10How do you prevent it from melting
11I actually think it's cute. I wish they did it just to do it rather than make a profit, but either way, still nice
YECH! I grew up vegan until I was 12. Vegan chocolate is NASTY.
12I'm not going to give anything that supports PETA, and their practices.
13I stand corrected harm
14LOL when I first tasted REAL chocolate I was so mad at my mom that she'd been giving me the fake stuff for years.
I never understood why kids liked chocolate so much when I was young.
Now I understand why.
15I'm hooked on vegan cookies, that $#!+ is gooood.
16Though PETA can be outrageous at times, overall, I feel they do quite a bit of good with creating awareness. I happen to like this recent idea and find the "Bin Laden Bites" message humorous.
As for vegan chocolate, when made properly, the taste can be wonderful. Of course it will never be taste same as dairy-filled chocolate however I don't feel it should. Luckily companies are figuring out (yummy) recipes that do not taste like chalk. (My current favorite is the "Black Panther Bar" by Endangered Species.)
I also love vegan cookies; quite a fan of The No Cookie Cookie brand (they happen to make a fab brownie) and Nana's. Just to add, Amy's vegan chocolate cake is delicious...
17I think that's a cute idea!
