By now, we've all heard that high-fat diets are bad for our health in the long run. But what about the short-term?
A new study on rats finds that 10 days of eating a high-fat diet caused short-term memory loss and made exercise difficult. While the finding may not seem a big surprise, the researcher say it might suggest that high-fat diets make humans lazy and stupid.
"Western diets are typically high in fat and are associated with long-term complications, such as obesity, diabetes, and heart failure, yet the short-term consequences of such diets have been given relatively little attention," said Andrew Murray, co-author of the study and currently at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. "We hope that the findings of our study will help people to think seriously about reducing the fat content of their daily food intake to the immediate benefit of their general health, well-being, and alertness."
The findings are detailed in the FASEB Journal.
Rodents are thought to be good analogues to humans for studies like this, but research in humans would be needed to confirm that the effects cross over. Also, because rats live much shorter lives, study effects may play out on significantly shorter time scales than in humans.
Murray and colleagues studied rats fed a low-fat diet (7.5 percent of calories as fat) and rats fed a high-fat diet (55 percent of calories as fat). Muscles of rats eating the high-fat diet for four days were less able to use oxygen to make the energy needed to exercise, causing their hearts to worker harder - and increase in size.
After nine days on a high-fat diet, the rats took longer to complete a maze and made more mistakes in the process than their low-fat-diet counterparts.
In the fat-laden rats the researchers found increased levels of a protein called uncoupling protein 3, which made them less efficient at using oxygen needed to make the energy required for running.
"It's nothing short of a high-fat hangover," said Dr. Gerald Weissmann, editor-in-chief of journal. "A long weekend spent eating hotdogs, French fries, and pizza in Orlando might be a great treat for our taste buds, but they might send our muscles and brains out to lunch."

A high-fat hangover... that's a new one.
1like in idiocracy?
2This news does not surprise me much. A high-fat diet affects the entire body, long & short term.
3The phrase "high-fat hangover" gives me a bit of a laugh though.
Wonder if anyone will attempt to call into work sick from a high-fat hangover?

starang182 the Amen Brain Clinic agrees, their human research is well documented.
Diet is absolutely influential on healthy brain function.
4I think as you get older, high-fat foods have a stronger impact on your brain - unless they seriously overdo, I've never noticed a kid get stupid or lazy, say on a weeklong trip to someplace like Disney where they do nothing but eat junk.
5Really? I don't think you need a scientist to figure this one out.
6Given the "nutritional" content of school lunches, is that why older teachers seem to be off their rockers?
7#5 That explains a lot.
Instead of lazy they just sit there and let birds poop on
their head.
8Brilliant observation... did you learn that in Medical Professional school?
9No. I was being observant. Try it sometime.
Gosh. I heard a rumor you had humor...but nope...just "step" right into nasty mode.
Seriously...that comment was priceless. You expected me to pass that up?
10No, not you.
11WOW^^^
Most times when I eat high fat foods I am sluggish right afterwards, so I am not surprised.
12People tease me at work for often eating a plate of fruit for lunch so now I find an apple on my desk in the morning. The people that sit around me are eating pastries and chips through out the day and every afternoon (oh I'm so tired..I don't have energy I need candy) I just sit in my cubical and shake my head.
13I don't think I could ever sit in a cubical all day. It would drive me bonkers. I gotta have people (real ones) to poke at and make faces at.
It is my goal everyday to take that one cranky person nobody wants to be around and make them laugh. Next thing you know they aren't cranky anymore and I am suddenly everyone's best friend. I pray for the day I figure out how to use this talent online.
How would I do that in a cubical? Well...it has been well established I squirm from being categorized and boxed.
14I know cheeky I think about that every day. All I see all day are walls and shades of off white and grey
At my last job I was soooo spoiled with one of the most beautiful views from an office you can ask for, the San Francisco Bay from the Golden Gate all the way around to the Bay Bridge. I miss watching the ships roll in and out, all the little sails from the sail boats and Alcatraz and Angel Islands. It was so therapeutic.
Speaking of my old job bad news today my old boss passed suddenly on a business trip. She was only 49-50, they say she had a rare neurological disorder. I am very saddened by the news. She was a very influential lady in land use politics and has written four books on the NIMBY syndrome and gave lectures around the country. Her memorial is going to be at city hall on Wednesday and of all things a pot luck, I thought that is great.
15I miss SF, the clubs and the food. We go up there every year for a festival.
16There's a couple every month between May and October. I love the Filmore Street Festival and Love Fest.
17We go there every year to eat huge Bratwurst sandwiches and chili-cheese fries.
Funny thing...I always seem smarter....Of course that is my dietary intake of fat for the year. Had my physical last week and my cholesterol was PERFECT!
I find I have to limit my sugar...both here and in real life...to remain sane.
