The Belgian city of Ghent is about to become the first in the world to go vegetarian at least once a week. Starting this week there will be a regular weekly meatless day, in which civil servants and elected councillors will opt for vegetarian meals.
Ghent means to recognise the impact of livestock on the environment. The UN says livestock is responsible for nearly one-fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions, hence Ghent's declaration of a weekly "veggie day".
Public officials and politicians will be the first to give up meat for a day. Schoolchildren will follow suit with their own veggiedag in September. It is hoped the move will cut Ghent's environmental footprint and help tackle obesity.
Around 90,000 so-called "veggie street maps" are now being printed to help people find the city's vegetarian eateries.

I'd just grab a salad anywhere, I don't like when people get all tricky with vegetables.
1Wow that's kinda cool!
2Oops sorry yes, it is a cool idea. Just no vegetarian restaurants for me thanks.
3Must be cause you're so picky Steph.
I'm pretty picky when it comes to vegetables. It would probably be a salad and green beans day for me!
4And don't even try serving me Belgian endive!
5Its a great idea. Try not eating dead cow for a day, your body will thank you. Sarah have you tried a boca burger or other soy products? Or a Buddhist delight dish at a chinese restaurant?

I would eat a veggie burger if I made it myself...saw a pretty good sounding recipe on The Food Network that I'd be willing to try. I loathe mushrooms and every store bought brand seems to have mushrooms in them. Even if I couldn't taste the mushroom, it would still gross me out!
I also really like vegetarian indian dishes, had some today in fact.
Never had those
chinese dishes though...I'd be willing to try!
Maybe I'm not as picky as I think I am.
7I order it with brown sauce - i am not a white sauce fan ( in any form). I have tried a lot of the veggie burgers. I hate gardenburgers, they are like mush -eeew! Morningstar are good but the flame grilled or all american boca is the best so far. Indian food is the best for eating veggie.

Steph, I am a really picky veggie eater, too (and a total carnivore, I might add!) but my favorite restaurant in Seattle is a vegitarian restaurant called Cafe Flora. Their mushroom curry is to die for! I got their cookbook and we have been trying to make something out of it at least twice a week.
I agree Sam, Buddha's Delight is an excellent chinese dish! Oh, and anything Indian, I am all over! Yummy, Sarah!
9As long as the burger didn't have mushrooms and tasted similar to a cow burger I'd eat it.
Next time I have chinese food I'll definitely check Buddha's Delight out. And I'd eat close to anything if it was covered in indian curries!
10OOOO Curry. Definitely having Indian this week.

Well, I am super lucky - hubby is Bangladeshi, so I eat Indian food nearly everyday. He is an EXCELLENT cook, too!
And, Sam, doesn't it taste even better the next day??? MMMMMM....
14Well Martini, guess I'll be stopping by your place real soon!
15Anytime, Sarah - my door is always open!!!
16YES it does. So does good Chinese food. Odd but I am okay with it.

pakoras?

They are good! Anything he makes is good! I swear, I am lucky that I don't weigh 500 pounds by now! LOL! I like his lamb the best, but he makes a really good green bean curry, too!
OMG - I am totally starving right now!
18And i am looking for a plane ticket to Washington.

24OK, ladies, since all those nasty farm animals are screwing up the environment, I feel it is my civic duty, to eat as many of them, and as often as I can. I am declaring that I am having not one but two Carnivore days every week, where I will not eat any veggies, because I care twice as much about the environment as they do.
25this is great news and i believe people are gradually becoming more and more aware if the good side of being veggie. i'm not a true veggie as i eat fish, but actually most days im all veggie and haven't eaten meat in about 1 year.. since reading 'skinny b*tch'
im glad to hear that boca burgers are good, bbq season is hard when you can't have a cheeseburger, and i definitely don't like the 'yves' or store brand ones, and wouldn't want a mushroomy one either! veggie dogs are nice though.....
26LOL, Gpa - actually, what you describe is my "usual" diet.
I am a HUGE carnivore. I have been trying to do more vegetarian meals for my health.
27Dear all - i love your comments and also Indian/Chinese/Thai/Japanese food - and i hope i will soon have an Indian till the end of my life -
28Wow Martini - did not know that - tomorrow i will be seeing my bf (best friend in this case) he is Bengali, too - and sometimes cooks with dad - btw: my dad's Mango Chutney is famous
i think that calls for a posting of his recipe

34Ok Samantha i will beg Dad for his SECRET

LOVE IS: The way to a man's heart is through his stomach - i.e. Grandpa has confirmed
35I have always been against senseless violence towards vegetables.
Let them LIVE!!!
