Up until Sunday night the media has had an orgasmic love affair with Adam Lambert. However his performance at the American Music Awards Sunday night with a few face to crotch maneuvers and kissing a man left some pulling their hands away like hand from the flame. Namely Good Morning America who cancelled his appearance after receiving complaints post his AMA performance. IMO their decision is nothing short of hypocrisy. His performance was no different than what provocative female performers have done before him.
I agree that prime time music performances in general have gotten a bit too racy on these award shows but that is not a reason to treat some one with discrimination. You either keep all provocative artists off morning shows or find just and fair ways to deal with the matter. Perhaps a healthy discussion of the matter with Adam would have been more socially beneficial than blatant discrimination.

i agree completely hypno! i think he was interviewed saying the exact same thing. such a double standard.
1We all know that it's perfectly acceptable for Britney Spears, Madonna, and Christina Aguilera to make out on stage. But two men?!?! Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!
2And I would argue that his performance was much more tame than Prince's "Get Off" performance at the MTV awards back in 91.
3I wanted to die when she told him to put out his hands then she slapped him. CMON! seriously, Adam should have smacked her right back, but backhanded.
It is a double standard. DId i like his performance? no i thought he sang horrible, the choreography was laughable, the outright "shock" value was cheesy but there shouldnt be this amount of backlash from it!
4I agree his voice wasn't the usual pristine we're use to hearing from him. I went to the A.I. concert and he was as close to perfection as anything. It sent chills down my spine. The AMA's though have always had bad sound quality though IMO. I don't know why maybe they want it to sound like a real concert from your TV and yes the choreography was sort of chaotic but after I heard him say what the song is about that might have been on purpose.
5For the record, it ISN'T alright for Brittany and Madona to make out on stage.
6Recent article on Yahoo & link below.
"However, the Parents Television Council (PTC) does not think "GMA" should have canceled Adam's performance. Dan Isett, Director of Public Policy for the PTC tells Access, "I do think it's a little bit unfortunate. This is not a personal crusade against Adam Lambert."
"The idea that he should be scrubbed from TV completely is not where we're going," Isett continued. "It may be a bit of an overreaction on ABC's part. The important thing is that networks have the easy ability to air on a delay to prevent this sort of thing."
But the PTC felt differently about Adam's appearance on the AMAs. Lambert "chose to treat American families to simulated (sic) sex and other demeaning behavior," Tim Winter, president of the PTC said on Monday.
Winter continued, "ABC and Dick Clark Productions had every reason to know what to expect, as Lambert himself proclaimed that his performance would be 'very sexy' and would include leather and chains. But the producers and the network chose to bury their heads in the sand."
The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) issued the following statement late in the day on Tuesday after discussions with "Good Morning America" staff members following their decision to cancel Adam's performance:
"Some music performances, regardless of the sexual orientation of the performer, are tailored for a primetime audience but not for a morning show audience," said Jarrett Barrios, President of GLAAD. "It is disappointing that 'Good Morning America' did not give Adam Lambert the opportunity to tailor his performance to their audience, as he did on their show in August 2009. We applaud the 'CBS Early Show' for taking this opportunity to work with Lambert on a performance that is entertaining for an early morning television audience.""

7boys kissing boys! girls kissing girls! OH NO! OH NO! WHAT WILL THE WORLD COME TO!?!?!?!? AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!
8Seriously I didn't like his performance but it wasn't because he kissed a boy. Who cares?
9Here's my beef with the networks, they should know better by now what is going to take place with certain performers who perform on an award show like AMA which has always been more hands off than say the Grammy"s when it comes to artistic freedom. What they should have done was air parental discretion warnings at the beginning of every segment and yes I would even go so far as to say before introducing the artist parents this is where you might want to make that choice. Hell Oprah does it AMA can do it to.
I don't buy the excuse from parents either that well what if I'm not home I don't know what they're watching. I'm sorry that doesn't fly any more with the technology available for parents to be hands on with their family programing.
10Just curious if you guys remember the whole Justin Timberlake / Janet fiasco. I think the difference is that this was not on the cable channels. People tend to forget about that.
11And I dont care that he kissed someone. I care about blatant sexuality in his performance, and thrusting a face into a crotch is pretty gross which ever way you swing. Definitely not something I'd want my kids watching.
"I think the difference is that this was not on the cable channels. People tend to forget about that."
12Let me make sure that this isn't confuded. i think the difference between the situtions mentions above were on cable where the AMA's and the superbowl were not. And they are held to a different standard.
I agree that there are different standards for cable vs. network but the audience is the same. If you watch the AMA's you're going to watch it on MTV or ABC. The difference in standards simply allows cable TV to not be so beholden to complaints IMO because they are cable TV.
I also agree that the more social issue beyond Mr. Lambert's unfortunate situation is sexualized performances in prime time but again that is not solved by discrimination but rather an open discussion when an opportunity such as this arises. There were so many precautions that could have been taken as I mentioned above that were not. This is a collaborative effort as well people have to use their noodle. If you don't want to watch Adam Lambert use the power, channel or mute button. I think if we use all of these common sense alternatives together this situation may not have unfolded like it has.
13I think the Janet/Justin thing (aka Nipplegate) is what started this overreaction to anything remotely risque.
But I agree, it was on network tv, so it will automatically cause more of a reaction than it would if this had happened on MTV.
14I was just watching them discuss this on O'Reilly and apparently although the show may have begun at 8:00pm which is prime time what happens after ten even if it's on a network has a lot more wiggle room to be sexualized.
Personally I'm fine with that but I think the bigger problem is people forget these terms and conditions and find themselves with their pants down no pun intended when these shocking performances catch them off guard. Parents need to take the time to do their homework and learn how to utilize parental controls and know that if their child is free to watch TV after ten they may from time to time be exposed to such programing. There is no excuse for parental or Network ignorance any more they need to be working together and utilize the information and technology that is there for what should be a healthy compromise.
15I didn't see the performance, but man, I'd make out with him. And then steal his eyeliner application tips.
16LMAO! I think I have a friend who would high five you on that one em1282.
You know I'm not typically into non-masculine men in appearance but Adam is so bold and true that makes up for the make up for me. I'd make out with him too, lol.
17I can't help it, hypno. He just pulls off the look so well and I love his confidence. And his spread in Details only made it worse when he had a naked chick all over him.
Just adding fuel to the fire!
18"I don't buy the excuse from parents either that well what if I'm not home I don't know what they're watching. I'm sorry that doesn't fly any more with the technology available for parents to be hands on with their family programing."
I agree, Hypno.
19People can change the channel. You don't have to watch the show. No one is forcing you to continue watching a performance that is too provocative for your tastes.
Why people feel the need to b*tch because they found something offensive is beyond me. I hate that sunday morning programming is all televangelists and paid programming - I think it's corrupting the youth who are up at that time of day
I don't go complaining to
people about it.
And it is such a double standard. Britney/Madonna/Christina could do it. MJ grabbed his crotch, how many rappers walk around holding their junk? But because it was a man kissing a man and so many people are homophobic or don't want their child to know that homosexuals are out there (as if their child will be touched by the magical gay wand simply by witnessing a homosexual), they'll make a big stink. Yes, TV in general is too provocative but that's where parents should step in and control what their parents watch. Of if you are going to complain, complain about the Oprah show on Erotica as much as you complain about Adam Lambert.
20"that's where parents should step in and control what their parents watch"
*control what their children watch. Maybe I was onto a thought there - maybe I should have said children should control what their parents watch
21I thought it was tasteless, just like I have thought many things that artists have done on these shows have been tasteless. I don't really care all that much if it was on tv- I don't think it should be banned or anything like that.
And, Hypno, you are right about the sound quality- it was terrible. Jay-Z had a lot of trouble, too.
22It is so funny the "standards" we have in America. Heaven forbid someone does something that references their body parts (under clothes)!!!! Or if they put their lips on another person's lips! Ahhh!!!
And yet, I watched Alias for many years, watching people get shot through the head on primetime network TV....and crickets. No one says anything. No one edited 24 when they torture people, the list goes on and on. There is so much brutal violence on network prime time TV, and for some reason that is acceptable but anything sexual isn't. We have such a crazy standards for sex and violence. Sex and our bodies are the most natural thing. Blowing someone's head off isn't.
23Interesting. I haven't watched those shows either. I would agree with you that there is too much graphic violence allowed on network tv, and cable is worse.
24My daughter LOVES music. She really wanted to watch the AMA's so i recorded it for her. But she didnt watch it. I think it is sad that they have to pollute minds so yound with so much sex! With that said, my kid doesnt watch anything violent either. By normalzing sex it will make kids interested in it earlier. Which is probably why we have such a high teen pregnnacy rate
25What do you mean "by normalizing sex"?
26I don't understand how there's any difference between what Lambert did and what others have done on awards shows - morning talk shows love to air that video and earnestly discuss 'the controversy'.
27I would think that the lack of sex education and promotion of abstinence only education has more to do with teen pregnancy than "normalizing sex".
Sex is normal. Practically every living creature reproduces in some form or another. Making it not normal and shameful is not the way to go.
28i thought that the stork brought me to my parents house!
29Probably a vulture hun.

32"By normalzing sex it will make kids interested in it earlier. Which is probably why we have such a high teen pregnnacy rate"
The urge to have sex is controlled by hormones, not TV. Teenagers have massive levels of hormones in their bodies, and even if you take away all popular culture, they will still notice when their classmates start to develop. You can't shield them from thinking about sex, because that is what nature programmed their bodies to do. I agree with Sarah, that sex education is the most important thing when it comes to insuring that young people handle their urges in a healthy way.
33This is homophobia. End of story. It's the height of heterosexism to think it's fine for straights to kiss, but gays cannot. If you have a problem with it, congrats - you are homophobic.
Madona has done things equally as provocative with men, and that was in the ancient 80s.
34I couldn't agree more with what Jillness had to say.
"My daughter LOVES music. She really wanted to watch the AMA's so i recorded it for her. But she didnt watch it. I think it is sad that they have to pollute minds so yound with so much sex!"
What I think you have to keep in mind is that music and performing is an art form and I don't think artist should worry about censoring themselves. Art is not necessarily appropriate for all audiences but that doesn't make it "bad" or "sad". Some of my favorite movies and songs are not child appropriate. There are plenty of artists who choose and like to be appropriate for all audiences, as that is the nature of their music. I'm sure the CMA's was very family friendly, she can watch that.
Also concerning youth, I grew up watching Prince almost from birth. He was HUGE in my family, yet I'm one of the most sexually conservative, as far as promiscuity/frequency goes, of all my friends. And I have friends who didn't have a TV in their home. The teen sex and pregnancy/STD issue is complicated and not something that can be chalked up to provocative music and performances alone.
35I agree with Jill.
I though Adam Lambert made a good point in his today show interview: in the same broadcast, Lady Gaga smashed whiskey bottles, Eminem sang about rape, and Janet Jackson groped a dancer's crotch. WHERE IS THE OUTRAGE?
36"This is homophobia. End of story. It's the height of heterosexism to think it's fine for straights to kiss, but gays cannot. If you have a problem with it, congrats - you are homophobic"
completely disagree with that statement.
37If it isn't homophobia, considering the other sexually charged performances that haven't kept the performers off morning talk shows, what is it?
38steph I dont want to see a man simulating oral sex with a woman on the tv....I dont want to see a performer making out with thier bandmates just for shock value....I dont like it if its man on man, girl on girl, or woman on man.....
THe media has an issue with it because it was over the top, not because it was "gay"
39But how is it not homophobic for Lambert to be pulled from morning shows and his video blurred when that hasn't happened with hetro stars like Britney, Madonna, Prince...
40I disagree CG. The media has replayed over the top performances from award shoes without blurring the video before. Or showing a still photo of the Britney/Madonna kiss right before their lips touch....How is that different?
I understand if you don't want to see it. That's your right as a viewer.
But the
fact is, on the very same show, his video was blurred and another racy performance wasn't.
41I dont know maybe they blurred him cause he sucks?
42I agree that the general reaction in the media at large has been mostly homophobic, but I'd like to qualify that by saying I could see why a lot of people would object to his performance for non-homophobic reasons. Some people just don't like lewd material on tv, whether the participants are two men, a man and a woman, or two women.
Personally, I didn't care for his performance, but not because I found it overly lewd. I just felt like he was doing a lot of things for shock value and his vocals were shaky because of it. I think he's a talented musician and that he should focus on his talent, not on trying to get attention. Of course I don't know for sure, but in my personal opinion, a lot of what he did in his performance was the garner attention. (And it obviously worked.)
43That should read was to garner attention...
44If they blurred out singers who sucked, Taylor Swift (sorry if any of y'all like her) would be blurred as well. And Miley Cyrus. Aaaaaand a lot of people on awards shows like this, IMO.
45I did not read any of the comments or half of the article. I am sorry but I have to say that I complained about Janet Jackson's one crotch grab, and so clearly was beyond shocked about Adam's performance! I do not care at all that he is gay... ACTUALLY I am a full supporter of gay rights! However, I do not ever think that it is okay to show things like that for young children to see! From the bondage outfits, constant groping of everyone on stage, and the violence shown in his kiss just isn't right for cable I am sorry! I don't care that he made out with a guy, I care that he seemed to be forcing the guy to kiss him, and that is a scary thing to publicize!
46Oops I meant it is not right for local channels not cable. Sorry! Even though I did say that seeing this on MTV would still shock me just as much!
47It's not really about whether people thought it was crude or over the top - the performance was meant to catch maximum attention. The issue is whether the networks are responding differently to Lambert than they have to other lewd performances.
48Actually his issue is that he was censored and that he believes it is strictly because of his sexual orientation. I have read many of his interviews and he consistently says it is because of his sexual orientation. Which I think is besides the point completely! I am not GMA and I don't care what the think or did, but I am saying that he was over the line in my opinion! He did MUCH more than one crotch grab like Janet Jackson! You cannot compare your performance to another performance when they are two totally different levels!
I know that he was going for talk and a wow factor, but I also know that I do not personally like the way that he chose to go about his wow factor! If someone could honestly tell me of another performance that showed up on prime time that was this racy or crude as Stephley said, I am sure I would say the exact same thing about that performer. I can say that I never saw anything that shocked me or made me feel as uncomfortable during a prime time awards show as all the groping, and forceful behavior I saw during this one.
If this is how he chooses to perform and make a name for himself, that is fully his choice. More power to him! If Manson can do it, then anyone can, right? I just do not think that his performance is comparable to reactions to one crotch grab. Nor do I recall ever seeing anything so shocking in a family awards show! Actually I take that back, in any awards show I do not ever recall anything this shocking. I do not mean to be offensive at all! I respect his right to be an artist in any fashion that suits him, and as he said his performances are not for everyone!
49On the same show, Jennifer Lopez climbed the backs of shirtless male dancers, Lady Gaga smashed whiskey bottles, Eminem sang about rape, and Janet Jackson groped a dancer's crotch.
I'm surprised to learn that for so many people, repeated, glamorized depictions of sexual violence are okay.
