MSNBC edits clip of man with gun at Obama rally to support racism narrative
I missed this yesterday at Newsbusters but Treacher, rightly aghast, tipped me to it this afternoon. Never will you see a starker example of MSNBC getting away with the sort of deception for which Fox News would be pilloried, especially in the context of race. If you missed Monday’s post about this, go watch the footage (or look at this photo) and see if you can deduce why they wouldn’t want to show the guy with the rifle from the neck up during this particular segment. For all the well-deserved heat that MSNBC’s primetime line-up has taken for its demagoguery — Maddow has been notably egregious during the health-care blowup — this proves that they’re not above pulling this crap during their daytime “hard news” segments either.
When you’re done with the clip, scroll through the new photo gallery Zombie’s put together of the many, many, many “Kill Bush” signs at leftist protests over the past eight years. Thank goodness outlets like MSNBC and the Huffington Post took such “blunt, no-argument stances” against that sort of insanity at the time.
View CNN video showing the man carrying the gun that MSNBC described as white is clearly black here.
Stila
Interesting to find out that the guy carrying the gun was black. I wonder how that fits in with the MSM's racist theory?
1I saw the guy in the video, but didn't see the pictures of the other guy who was black? I agree that it'll be interesting to see how the reaction is to MSNBC's obvioius slant in this reporting.
2Here is a source link with the CNN video: http://hotair.com/archives/2009/08/17/video-people-bringing-assault-rifl...
That's pretty blatant lying on MSNBC's part... yikes. Sometimes I wonder if people who push this idea that so many people in this country are pissed off that a black man is president actually WANT something to happen. Because they keep putting it out there and they are usually willing to twist information to support the idea.
I have no problem discussing race issues when they are merited, backed up be events that actually did happen, etc, but bringing race into this issue is just an outright lie and meant to do nothing but push an agenda.
3I do think this is interesting though because if MSNBC hadn't done this, it would have never occured that the guy toting the gun could have been an African American.
I mean who where isn't kinda surprised by that? We just assume its some white redneck.
Very interesting when something blatantly challenges a stereotype.
4Just saw the CNN video. WOW! I agree Haus, what agenda are they pushing? Maybe they (MSNBC) don't want Obama to be President, and want to incite something.
5ugh riddled with errors! "never occured to me*" and where = here.
6UD - I think they want him to be Pres but I think they want their own opinions to be right more, I think they are looking for that "see I told you so moment!" because... I dont know... they think the majority of the country is stupid? Racist? I don't know.
I can't think of any other reason why they would do something like this, if anyone can my ears are open!
7wow, cant say I am surprised msnbc would stoop to that level. I am just surprised they actually got caught. Maybe people will see them for who they are.

"The federal government and its bureaucracies dictating who, when, and what kind of treatment you receive is not reform at all."
I doubt it, Hainan. To some people if you disagree with Obama or if you demonstrate your rights in his vicinity, you're a racist. And even if you aren't, Obama's media will portray you as one.
9I keep trying to think of a reason why they would do this that isn't linked to ideology. I don't want to be all conspirartorial....
I haven't thought of anything yet...
10I don't understand why they couldn't have just corrected that commentator.
I added the source to the post and all the links in the text from the original blog post on Hot Air.
11And the pics of the 'kill Bush' signs in the link are just disturbing. The guillotine is pretty creative though, I have to say.
12"I keep trying to think of a reason why they would do this that isn't linked to ideology"
I believe if you investigate further, while one individual was black, the group he was with, Freedom's Phoenix, has some interesting ideological ties.

13"Expose thyself to what wretches feel," King Lear said, entering the mud and straw hovel of Poor Tom, "and show the heavens more just."
TS - It seems to me that that was the point of the segment, the racism factor... even though it wasn't one.
14But why hide his race?
15Steph - If I click that link will I be put on a watch list??
Well the website is meant to be a place where people can post articles they feel are pertinant to the restriction of freedoms. I didn't see anything offensive or racist or anything.
16Salon.com has an article about at least one other guy who brought a gun to the Obama event, the New Hampshire guy, as having some shady associations.
http://www.salon.com/opinion/walsh/politics/2009/08/12/william_kostric/
If nothing else, this article is a lesson about why you shouldn't use the same user name all over the internet. It seems to have been way too easy for salon.com to cyber stalk this guy.
17If you pay attention to who the radio announcer is, the stunt'a engineer, the race factor is there, and then some.

18"Expose thyself to what wretches feel," King Lear said, entering the mud and straw hovel of Poor Tom, "and show the heavens more just."
Well, they definitely should have corrected her because she said something like "white people with guns" even though the person in the clip was black.
But the rest of what they were talking about was pretty general. Just because that one guy was black a, doesn't mean he can't be racist, and b, doesn't mean there aren't a lot of angry and possibly racist people out there.
19Well, supposedly, the guy in these videos is a plant. It was all part of some radio show's publicity stunt.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/08/18/right-wing-radio-host-sta_n_262...
If that is true, I bet they are getting a good laugh at msnbc's expense right now.
20"But the rest of what they were talking about was pretty general. Just because that one guy was black a, doesn't mean he can't be racist, and b, doesn't mean there aren't a lot of angry and possibly racist people out there."
True, TS. While I certainly think them using the footage of this one individual was a little misleading, I don't think it is necessarily "fraud" in journalism.
21Shady associations seems kind of objective.
Ok after read the Salon thing... yes some of it is concerning, but some of it is lies. The Free State project is not about succession. And why is having Ron Paul as a hero a bad thing? Or why is being a libertarian suddenly a bad thing?
Granted some of his quotes are pretty out there and cause for concern, but I dunno, I don't think that makes him violent. I'm sure there's stuff we all say in the company of like minded people that aren't exactly PC.
To me the most scary part is definately the cyber stalking on the part of Salon.com!
Either way, none of the stuff from that article points to racism that I can see.
22I don't know how "live" these shows are. Did she just say that so they had to change it when she did? Or was this more planned? Did they mean to have footage of one of the white guys with guns and it got lost?
It's definitely shady and they should have made a correction. Anyone know if they did?
23hmmm i wonder if part of the stunt was to see who would show that it was a black man and who wouldn't..
24oops meant subjective, not objective.
25I will definitely be watching with even more of a jaundiced eye anything on MSM news. I think it's disgusting to bring up race in this incident.
26>Shady associations seems kind of subjective.
Oh, golly. Do I want to bring up Wright and Ayers? Or do I want to get some work done this morning...
27Well they say Kostric (sp?) lists Randy Weaver as one of his heroes on his myspace page. Weaver is supposedly a white supremacist but who the heck knows for sure? All I know for certain about him is that he was involved with Ruby Ridge.
28And of course listing this man as a hero doesn't mean that Kostric is racist. He could admire him for something else, but I think to news anchors that is where the "white supremacist" spin would come into play.
29No TS you'd be right! What I think is shady and what you do is probably not the same thing.
I think thats why its so hard for law enforcement to find these people BEFORE the violent incident.
We definately have to be careful and vigiliant, but we also can't allow our own judgements and biases to cloud the situation. In this case, I feel that MSNBC allowed their own biases (whether it was just the reporter or the org as a whole) to cloud the facts of the incident.
30"doesn't mean there aren't a lot of angry and possibly racist people out there." I hope there is not " a lot". We do know there are some. I saw him on the news holding a baton in front of a voting site last November.
31I hope that comment isn't an example of you taking the high road.
--------------------------
32"Expose thyself to what wretches feel," King Lear said, entering the mud and straw hovel of Poor Tom, "and show the heavens more just."
I think he means he saw one (meaning an angry possibly racist person).
33Yesssssssssssssss!
34I understood his meaning Haus.
--------------------------
35"Expose thyself to what wretches feel," King Lear said, entering the mud and straw hovel of Poor Tom, "and show the heavens more just."
I am not sure I understand the context of your comment, Steph. What in that last comment I made has me falling off the "high road"?
36I'd say it's the snarky racist deflection subcontext.
--------------------------
37"Expose thyself to what wretches feel," King Lear said, entering the mud and straw hovel of Poor Tom, "and show the heavens more just."
Because i said that I hope they are not a lot of racist people out there? I did acknowledge their are some. We will find fringe groups in a society as large as ours,on any subject, heck there are still flat earthers out there
38"We do know there are some. I saw him on the news holding a baton in front of a voting site last November"
39Everything AFTER you said I hope there "is not a lot" - but you know that.
--------------------------
40"Expose thyself to what wretches feel," King Lear said, entering the mud and straw hovel of Poor Tom, "and show the heavens more just."
You mean "We do know there are some. I saw him on the news holding a baton in front of a voting site last November." Exactly where do I mention race? If you have a better example from the news..... Not a sign carrier, we all know those can be plants, but someone actually intimdating or attcking others?
41I said subcontext. Your game is boring; your intent was obvious.
--------------------------
42"Expose thyself to what wretches feel," King Lear said, entering the mud and straw hovel of Poor Tom, "and show the heavens more just."
Steph, you are so predictable
43Seriously, enough!
44I second TS.
45
46HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! I love that!!
What is the word for that???
47It was an html code.
Here is the link where I got it: http://www.pushupstairs.com/images/emoticon/eviewer.php?category=extra2

49That didn't work out for me.
