Seems outrageous that a potentional presidential assassin is in the guest mix with politicians, reality show stars, celebrity chefs... but Sara Jane Moore, who served time for trying to killed Gerald Ford was on Today this week.

Would-be presidential assassin Sara Jane Mooreâwho on Sept. 22, 1975, fired a .38-caliber bullet at President Gerald R. Fordâsat down for a convivial interview Thursday with Today show host Matt Lauer.
Fordâs White House photographer, David Hume Kennerlyâwho, like the president, narrowly missed getting killed or wounded that day as Ford departed an event at San Franciscoâs St. Francis Hotelâwas outraged by the spectacle.
âWatching it, I got pissed off,â Kennerly says. âSheâs on there, laughing and joking and really not taking responsibility for what she did.â
âThat was the woman with the gun, who was in the crowd in 1975âand now sheâs talking on TV like sheâs discussing a knitting contest or something ludicrous like that,â Kennerly told me last night. âI thought it was bizarre. I would like to say she shouldnât be on TV at all. The only reason she was on there is because sheâs an 80-year-old woman who, when she was 45, tried to kill the president.â
Kennerly, who had been a prize-winning combat photographer in Vietnam and other war zones before going to work for the White House, managed to get a few quick images of the president wincing and being shoved by the Secret Service into his limousine, along with White House Chief of Staff Donald Rumsfeld, as the single shot rang out and a bystander grabbed Mooreâs Smith & Wesson and slammed her to the pavement a mere 40 feet away. The stray bullet passed within three feet of Kennerly and ricocheted off a wall, slightly injuring a bystander.
âI find it, honestly, hard to blame NBC or the Today show for what was obviously good television,â Kennerly said. âThis is the world we are living in now, where news judgment and values have deteriorated. But watching it, I got pissed off. Sheâs on there, laughing and joking and really not taking responsibility for what she did.â
Kennerly said he was especially struck by how NBC teased the interviewâfirst showing Moore in darkened silhouette before bringing up the lights to reveal a sweet, gray-haired old lady, as though she were a game-show contestant. âIt reminded me of Whatâs My Line?â Kennerly said. âExcept in this case, her line was âwould-be presidential assassin.ââ
The 80-year-old Moore, who was released on parole in 2007 after 32 years in prison and has been living quietly for the past two years in an unidentified town, was dressed in a white blouse and smartly tailored black suit. She was perfectly composed, occasionally flashing a wry smile and speaking in thoughtful, well-turned phrases.
âOh I think it was wrong,â she conceded under Lauerâs gentle questioning. âOf course, I think it was understandably wrong, but thatâs my ego talking. Horrific? I donât know. Those are words I donât use⊠I was misled. I think I was mistaken. I think I made a serious error.â
That was the closest to a heartfelt mea culpa that Lauer managed to get out of Mooreâa 45-year-old bookkeeper and five-times-divorced mother of four when she tried to kill the presidentâwho punctuated her 12-minute television appearance with grandmotherly giggles. Indeed, during the interview, she repeatedly characterized herself as an unwitting victimâand the evil act she committed as a natural symptomâof the political turmoil of the 1970s.
âPeople donât rememberâwe had a war⊠in this country,â Moore explained.
âYou were swept up in this antiestablishment, left-wing movement,â Lauer echoed, adding, âYou really thought at one point that if you didnât try to kill Gerald Ford, someone else would.â
âOh, I still think that,â Moore agreed. âI think if I hadnât done it, someone else wouldâveâŠThat was the tenor of the time. There was more talk about it than people realize.â
The interview ended with Lauer telling his guest: âThank you for being with us this morning. I appreciate it.â
âItâs been a pleasure,â Moore responded.
Kennerly said: âI donât want to criticize Matt. I like the guy. I think he was trying to get her to say that what she did was âhorrendousâ or âhorrific.â He was trying to put words in her mouth. He wanted her to make the big breakdown and cry, and say, âIâm really sorry that I tried to kill the president.â But she wasnât going there.â
NBC had no comment this morning concerning Kennerlyâs observations, though a source suggested that the Pulitzer Prize-winning photographerâwho until December was under contract as an NBC News contributorâwas suffering from sour grapes because the Today show recently passed on his coffeetable photography book commemorating President Barack Obamaâs inauguration.
âSour grapes aren't part of my personality,â Kennerly said, âunless, of course, they involve people who tried to kill a presidentâand me and my friends along with himâand then leave the obscurity they so richly deserve to chat publicly about it years later as if they were sitting there discussing the latest Zadie Smith book.â

She must be Drew Peterson's idol.
1Sure she should be interviewed because it's legitimate news. Now if he has a problem with what she has to say well we can't do anything about that but to say she shouldn't be interviewed and scrutinized is ludicrous.
2I don't think she should be interviewed. This only helps to sensationalize the crime, which will encourage those to do the same. Shoot at the President, become famous.
3Hey I can run down the street naked and become famous I don't need to shoot the President. Plus she can earn money to support her self because I sure as hell don't want to support her any more. Do you?
4Ummm, maybe very locally, but it would be a small market.
5Tried to assassinate the POTUS, and all she got was 32 years?
6Yeah that surprised me too, Brandy...but as far as having her on the air? This is America...
7No i dont think she should be interviewed.
8Plus she can earn money to support her self because I sure as hell don't want to support her any more. Do you?
Such a good point, Hypno!
